When alginate is used
Alginate suits heavily exuding wounds, cavity and packing wounds, and some bleeding wounds (alginate has haemostatic properties). A secondary dressing (such as foam) is usually applied over the top. Alginate is not used on dry wounds, which need added moisture instead.
